18 Top Things To Avoid In Mykonos For First-Timers

First time going to Mykonos Island? If I had known then what I know now my trip would have been a lot more magical.

These top things to avoid in Mykonos are aimed at all you first-timers, so listen up!  

This post will prepare you with a list of things NOT to Do in Mykonos to ensure you don’t make these common mistakes on your first trip to the island. 

#1. Taking A Taxi Everywhere

Want to go bankrupt on your first day? Then avoid relying on taxis and private transfers as they can be very expensive in Mykonos. 

It might be unavoidable when you first arrive in Mykonos at either the airport or ferry port. But generally getting around I would advise that you seek other options.  

 The best way to get around Mykonos is considered to be on foot if you stay close to Mykonos town and want to walk everywhere. However, it can be expensive to stay in the center.

It is almost a catch-22 in Mykonos. You either need to stay outside the center in remote areas, but rent a car, or pony up the money for a hotel in the main areas. 

The public transport in Mykonos is by bus. You can find that the bus goes to most major points of interest on the island.

The services are safe, clean, and a great option if you are on a budget. 

#2. Flushing Toilet Paper

As someone who lived in Greece for half a year, this is something that I want everyone to know and respect. The pipes in Greece are far too old, and small and often get blocked. 

This why you MUST NOT throw toilet paper in the toilet. Instead, use the bin provided in the bathroom. 

This goes for your accommodations, even luxury hotels, ferries, restaurants, and everywhere in between. 

#3. Not Having Cash

In Greece, and especially in the Greek Islands, cash is still king. So you want to make sure you have it on hand.

Upscale restaurants and beach clubs will take credit cards, but it’s smart not to rely on them. 

#4. Visiting in July and August

I know what you might be thinking here, but isn’t July and August the best time to come to Mykonos for the party scene?

And while it can be, visiting Mykonos in these peak-season summer months is when the popular destination is the most crowded and expensive.

The summer season is prime time for cruise ships that flood the new port with loads of people making the tourist areas unbearable. 

Pro Tip: A great time of year to visit Mykonos is the shoulder season of early June or mid-September, you’ll thank me later. The hot spots are all still open, but it’s not as overrun with tourists. 

#5. Buy Gifts at Airport Duty-Free

The airport here is quite compact, offering limited options. For those keen on taking souvenirs or items back home, it’s advisable to make your purchases in the town before heading to the airport.

#6. Not Visiting Delos UNESCO World Heritage Site

The small island of Delos is approximately 30 minutes away from Mykonos by small boat. I highly recommend not missing it. 

A great way to experience Delos is by taking a day trip and a guided tour by one of the local companies. 

It was a cool way to spend an afternoon and would advise you don’t miss it! 

#7. Thinking Mykonos is Budget-Friendly. 

When people ask if is Mykonos that expensive, it almost makes me laugh. They don’t call it Millionaires Island for nothing ; )

Yes, Mykonos is one of the most expensive islands I have ever been to.

But, there are ways to make it more affordable, and all these ways start with planning early, and doing your research on dining options. 

#8. Not Having Reservations

One of the things to avoid in Mykonos showing up without reservations, especially at the beach clubs in July and August.

Popular places like Super Paradise Beach and Tropicana Beach Club always book up fast, so look into your options and plan accordingly. 

It is also important you get dinner reservations. Places with great food in Mykonos always book up first.  

If you aren’t looking for a fancy meal, you can check out some of the small local restaurants like Pepper Souvlaki which is a street food restaurant. No reservations are required.

#9. Booking Hotels Last Minute

Something major to avoid in Mykonos is waiting till the last minute to get a hotel.

The options that you will find last minute are usually the most expensive ones, so if you want to ensure a good deal, book early. 

I stayed at a great hotel for around $150 per night that was within walking distance of Mykonos Town.

#10. Going to the Beach Near Mykonos Town

If you are staying in Mykonos town you might think a good beach is the Paralia Megali Ammos beach within a 20-minute walk. But it is a place you want to avoid. 

This beach is very windy most of the time and has some spark rocks.

So if you want to avoid a day at the beach you could regret, take the bus from Fabrika bus station one of the great beaches such as Oronos beach.

#11. Get Annoyed About Smokers

If it’s one thing I truly hate it’s smoking at restaurants while I eat.

But you are in Europe now and sadly it’s common and constant, so you shouldn’t let it bother you and ruin your trip. 

#12. Missing Beautiful Sunsets at Little Venice

Something you absolutely want to avoid missing in Mykonos is catching the sunset at Little Venice.

Even if you are traveling solo to Mykonos, it’s a romantic moment you don’t want to miss.

I spent a lovely evening gazing at the Aegean Sea, Aperol spritz in hand and admired the colorful balconies and waves crashing on the buildings.  

It will be busy, so it’s a good idea to get there ahead of sunset and claim a spot with a good view. A great place to go is Negrita Bar Mykonos.

#13. Only Visiting Mykonos

Mykonos is close to some pretty awesome and affordable islands. I recommend you island hop to at least one of the nearby lesser-known Greek Islands. 

Each of the Cycladic islands in Greece has a different vibe, and as much as I love Santorini, I would suggest you check out a less famous one like Milos. 

#14. Not Taking A Water Taxi

Make time to take a water taxi to Elia Beach if you have the time. Using the water taxis is a fun experience that you don’t want to miss in Mykonos. 

You can get a day pass for under 30 euros and use it for unlimited rides to all the beaches in Mykonos.

#15. Avoid Tap Water

The tap water on the entire island of Mykonos is not drinking water. One of the best things to do is buy bottled water at the local mini-markets. 

#16. Not Being Mindful of Your Property

While I never experienced any issues, the crime rate for petty crime, such as petty theft is slowly ticking upward.

So it’s important to not leave your valuables just lying around. 

#17. Overdoing It With Alcohol

Be responsible. I know Mykonos is a party island, but drunk driving is not acceptable and not worth it. 

18. Not Going to 180 Sunset Bar

Finally, for a memorable experience, don’t forget to get drinks at 180 Sunset Bar. This is one of the best places for a sunset view on the entire island.

In the end, a well-planned trip is always the best way to ensure a successful trip!
